View Rose's 3- hour Online Oil Portrait Workshop through Sentient Academy, recorded at the Fantastic Arts Conference (March 2020). See trailer. SUGGESTED MATERIALS FOR Figurative WORKSHOp

If you plan on painting along with me during the workshop, here is a list of tools and materials  I will be using. You may want to gather similar supplies.

SUGGESTED materials

1. Portable EASEL

2. OIL BRUSHES & palette knife

  • Stiff bristle brushes for heavy body paint

  • Med/soft bristles for edges & detail

  • All shapes welcome: round, flat, filbert, angled, etc.

  • Palette knife for mixing paints

4. STRETCHED CANVAS or PANEL

  • .PRE-PRIME, TINTED, or UN-TINTED

 

5. OILS ON ROSE'S PALETTE 

You DO NOT need to purchase all the colors below. I will be demoing from a selection of these favorite oil colors. I might not use all the colors on the day of the workshop, but a more limited palette. This is a typical list  of colors that I use. You may have your own preferences.

6. SOLVENT JAR

Rose Datoc Dall prefers odorless. Suggested brands:

  • Gamsol Odorless Thinner

  • Odorless Turpenoid

  • Mona Lisa Thinner- odorless

  • NO TURPENTINE

7. RAGS/PAPER TOWELs and/or wipes for clean-up

  • Pre-moistened Wipes for hands/brushes also recommended, like TUB-O-TOWELS.

8. BAGS FOR TRASH 

Grocery bags or small trash bags for discarded rags, towels, trash, etc. at your station.

9. OPTIONAL- LATEX OR VINYL GLOVES.

10. OPTIONAL- OIL MEDIUM

Rose Datoc Dall does not use medium typically, but you may bring one of your choice, homemade or commercial.

11. OPTIONAL- MAHL STICK

For steadying your hand for detail work.

12. OPTIONAL- cell phone or tablet camera

Use cell phone/tablet camera and apps to aid your painting process.

13. OPTIONAL- DSLR CAMERA

Use camera and apps to take reference photos of the model.
