During the pandemic, leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints requested a new vision for the foyers or entryways of Church meetinghouses – the art to reflect a deeper reverence for the Lord Jesus Christ. Many Church buildings have new artwork, others are in the process of change. A diverse group of Latter-day Saint artists are creating images that reflect the cultural and racial ‘peoples of the world.’ Get a behind-the scenes look at the Church’s art collection and how copies of those works are made and sent worldwide. The Primary General Presidency have chosen art for her offices – why they find those images sacred and why it is important that Latter-day Saint children experience art that moves them too. And finally, The Center for Latter-day Saint Arts in New York City. See the diversity of sacred art in an exhibit titled “Great Awakening.”

Today, painter and artist Rose Datoc Hall sits with Christie and Michelle to talk about how she shows up to hear Him in her work and art. And as someone who has painted New Testament scenes for 30 years, she has invaluable insight. Rose felt led to paint spiritual subject matter as she began her artistic career. Her work is her testimony and a reflection of what she’s going through spiritually at the time. Art is the tool she uses to connect with God and to hear Him, which is why she recently decided to reevaluate the way she paints Jesus. Although she doesn’t know what He looks like, she knows what He feels like, and she wants others to feel Him through her work. How have you felt connected to God through your work? This video documentary was prepared for the retrospective exhibition of the artwork of Rose Datoc Dall, "Jesus Once Was a Little Child": Images from the Early Years of the Savior. Twenty one paintings from both collectors, the Church History Museum and the artist are represented from this series in this exhibition which debuted at the Washington DC Temple Visitors Center. It is a rare opportunity to see the images all together at one time. The title of the exhibition, "Jesus Once Was a Little Child" is borrowed from a Primary Children's song by Joseph Ballantyne and text by James R. Murray. This documentary show works in progress and Rose talks about how this series began and evolved over a ten year period. While she has been painting the series, she has been drawing the mother and Christ child series for over 20 years. Featured theme music was composed and conducted by Thomas Fairholm with lyrics by Rose Datoc Dall (adapted by Thomas Fairholm) to accompany her images. The Stone Bridge Jazz Choir performed the music in the video.

A talented Filipino-American artist, Rose Dall, notes her greatest life's work is not her paintings but her family. The effects of mothering, she says, will far outlast her career. Rose talks about her experience creating the series. This video also features is a video documentary of the making of the series plus bonus footage not included in the original fireside. The exhibition of 21 original oils is entitled "Jesus Once Was a Little Child," a title borrowed from a Primary Children's song by Joseph Ballantyne, text by James R. Murray.
