  • Christ is depicted in this painting just barely on the brink of manhood, in the carpentry shop, surrounded by tools of the trade. The arched format is a throw- back to Renaissance iconic portraits with many of its symbolic elements. The sickle symbolizes reaping as He is the Gatherer; the sheep shears make reference to Christ as the Shepherd; the mallet and chisel symbolize Christ as the Master Sculptor; the triangle and the wood plane represent straightness and trueness in keeping covenants; the compass divider, in the hands of the Boy Savior, signifies that Christ is indeed the Creator of the world.
