Young Carpenter, by Rose Datoc Dall, Framed 14.75x22 Canvas Print
Christ is depicted in this painting just barely on the brink of manhood, in the carpentry shop, surrounded by tools of the trade. The arched format is a throw- back to Renaissance iconic portraits with many of its symbolic elements. The sickle symbolizes reaping as He is the Gatherer; the sheep shears make reference to Christ as the Shepherd; the mallet and chisel symbolize Christ as the Master Sculptor; the triangle and the wood plane represent straightness and trueness in keeping covenants; the compass divider, in the hands of the Boy Savior, signifies that Christ is indeed the Creator of the world.
