Anointing for Burial 02 by Rose Datoc Dall, 15x28.8 Signed Ltd Ed Print on Paper
A Signed Limited Edition print on fine art paper. An unnamed woman (sometimes attributed to Mary of Bethany or Mary Magdalene) anoints Jesus' head for burial in the days before his crucifixion. It’s an ordinance performed by a woman less portrayed in art. The disciples rebuked they woman for using Spikenard, an expensive ointment, but Jesus said, “why trouble ye the woman? For she hath wrought a good work upon me… to anoint my body to the burying. Wheresoever… throughout the whole world… shall be spoken of for a memorial of her.” Revolutionary in the face of the pervading cultural attitude toward women, Jesus honored this woman's devotion and relevance as a female disciple.
