Anointing for Burial by Rose Datoc Dall (prices $45 - $166)
An unnamed woman (sometimes attributed to Mary of Bethany or Mary Magdalene) anoints Jesus' head for burial in the days before his crucifixion. It’s an ordinance performed by a woman less portrayed in art. The disciples rebuked they woman for using Spikenard, an expensive ointment, but Jesus said, “why trouble ye the woman? For she hath wrought a good work upon me… to anoint my body to the burying. Wheresoever… throughout the whole world… shall be spoken of for a memorial of her.” Revolutionary in the face of the pervading cultural attitude toward women, Jesus honored this woman's devotion and relevance as a female disciple.
